How much data does a phone use in 'standby'?

Thanks RR - I'm sure you are right. I was only going by what happened to me previously - weird 'packets' being gobbled up, and when i briefly turned on my 'mobile data' switch on this new contract, a 'packet' instantly disappeared too. I was looking for an explanation, and reassurance that this wouldn't continue, and I'm happy I've got this.Man, I am soooo 21st century.0

Och, all good. Been running with mob data on for a good few days, and data hasn't flinched.
Now I just need a way of blowing it all - must use up my full quota...must...must...0 -

I once burned through £25 with GiffGaff in about 3 minutes, couple of 5G speed tests at PAYG rates.....1 -
Lol!
Nah, I wasn't serious. But 'gulp!'
I've been happily doing normal interweb stuff on occasions when I'm out, including checking up on this forum..., and it still hasn't dropped from the 2.9GB it showed at the beginning. Daily usage is in the order of a couple of hundred k max :-(0 -
Yep, sound about right. The only time you'll see significant usage are the obvious things like streaming video or using the phone for continuous sat-nav (or speed tests).1

If there are any apps running in the background that require consistent internet, you will see a lot of data leakage. Most of the social media apps like Snapchat, Instagram consumes alot of internet because they keep on loading new data to give the smooth application interface to users. Similarly, Youtube consumers a lot of data even in the background. Make sure you close these apps for saving internet.2

Cheers - that all makes sense.Pleased that SatNav doesn't use too much, as that will be a useful feature. I guess, once the maps are downloaded, it then relies on GPS. But to set the route in the first place uses 'web. But not much. All good - very pleased. Thanks all.0
