Self assessment - not showing I’ve paid

I have completed my self assessment for the 21-22 year. On my government gateway it now says I have completed my tax return.
I also paid the tax amount due which needs to be paid by the 31st Jan. I paid this via the gateway and transferred from my bank account on 20th Jan.
On my government gateway it still says I owe £XXXX by the 31st January. But then I scroll further and it says that I paid £XXXX on the 20th Jan with a payment reference number. Is this a glitch? Should I just wait for the system to update itself. I’m worried it gets to the 31st Jan and it’s still showing I owe money!
many thanks.

Suspect  it can take a bit of time to fully register on the system, have usually paid in the last few weeks of January and don't usually check whether it has updated. TBH I wasn't planning on paying mine until Monday !

Nothing to worry about on two fronts. Firstly, you clearly have paid! Secondly, there are no fines attached to a payment not being made by 31st January- just interest at the rate of 6% per annum.
  • From my own experience it takes 3 to 5 working days for tax payments to be allocated to a taxpayers account and appear in the online statement of account.

Have recently been testing this process for Corporation tax as HMRC no longer accept cheques (they still do for Income tax) to establish daily limits using the mobile phone app compared to online digital banking, and again found the 3 to 5 working days period to be about the norm.
