Council tax reduction

Hi,  I was talking to a pensioner guy over the weekend, got talking about cost of living etc.
Will he qualify for council tax reduction
He receives his SP £9k + and has no other income
His wife still works part time and receives just under £10k after tax etc, think he said she is 2 yrs away from SP. Said they have plenty of cash in various accounts and use it to top up their income.
Is there a online calculator he/me could use.
A thankyou is payment enough .

You said they have plenty of cash, if their total savings is more than £16,000 he will not be eligible.
If that isn’t the case I would suggest he applies, the worst that can happen is that he is told you is not entitled.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

I suspect their savings are more the £16k, but it’s no a question I can ask outright imo.
but will tell, next time I bump into him.

  • it does change when the wife reaches state pension age,  so even if they don't get anything now, worth checking in the future.

Council Tax Reduction rules are set locally and not nationally.
Some. LA's will reduce an award if savings over 6k, others don't want to know unless the amount is higher, etc.

His local authority website should hopefully have a calculator for CTR.

I believe you can use the turn2us calculator which will set the rules according to postcode
