I'm fairly certain my mum hasn't parted with any cash yet, but despite the contract stating "payment on completion" her neighbour, has, I believe, already made a substantial payment.
Get on the phone and tell mum dont do that not matter what sob story they gove - then bank transfers only
If/when payment is made, doing so via credit or debit card would seem a more obvious means of securing some additional protection via s75 or chargeback.
    Thanks!!!!

But that assumes he takes credit cards.  Which I rather doubt.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Good point. I was going to say that as i felt this roofer was one of those that changes names every two years but though, its worth a try

Thanks all of you for your input.

A friend of a friend who's a roofer has been to have a look this afternoon and it does indeed appear that they're inventing issues and charging way over the odds for the work that does in fact need doing. He's dubious that they even intend to return.
