Samsung Galaxy J5 problems

Asking on behalf of my elderly friend...
HSBC app disappered - god knows why, possibly uninstalled accidentally. The problem is that Play Store app doesn't work. It starts only to show the search field and 'No results found' message'. Version 34.01.12-21 - whatever this means. Internet connection is fine.
The OS is some ancient 2018 release, and I don't see any way of updating it. J5 was released in 2015.
Any ideas beside obvious new phone and HSBC fob instead of the app?

The HSBC website has a guide for installing their app without the Play Store. You can just download the app file straight to your phone, but you will enable a setting on your phone before this works.
You'll need to access the link with your mobile phone and follow the instructions to install the app:
https://www.hsbc.com.hk/ways-to-bank/mobile-apps/banking/#how-to-install
As for the Play Store not working, could you try restarting the mobile phone, if you haven't already?
Hope that helps.1 -
Can you check which version of Android is installed? The HSBC app needs 7.0 and up.
There's only 8GB of storage on the J5, any chance that it's full?2 -
Yes, restarted it. I'll try the link. Thank you, but don't hold my breath because of the OS.Huynha said:The HSBC website has a guide for installing their app without the Play Store. Update:
I followd the instructions for APK. Installatin started, but that didn't last long - "App not installed" and an exclamation mark in a triange, without any further details. What else can we expect from these app developers?1 -
Ah right. You have the supported android version, so it's probably not the OS.grumbler said:Update:

If you've also enabled the 'Install Unknown Apps/Unknown Source' option, maybe the app permissions need to be reset.
Can you try going to Settings > Apps > Reset App Preferences/Reset Application Permissions > Tap Reset
While you're in settings, you could also try and clear the app package installer cache by going to Settings > Apps > Package Installer > Tap Clear Cache and Data
Then try and install the APK again through the HSBC link?

Yes, enabled earlier. It shows 'Allowed' for My Files.Huynha said:

If you've also enabled the 'Install Unknown Apps/Unknown Source' option, maybe the app permissions need to be reset.
Can you try going to Settings > Apps > Reset App Preferences/Reset Application Permissions > Tap Reset
Resetted 'Preferences' (with 'Permission restrictions' at the bottom of the list). Not sure about 'Reset Application Permissions'While you're in settings, you could also try and clear the app package installer cache by going to Settings > Apps > Package Installer > Tap Clear Cache and DataThere is no Package Installer in the list of apps, only some Meta App Installer.
Result is still the same: App not installed.1 -
I see, perhaps it might be Google Play Protect preventing the app from being installed.grumbler said:

Could you try temporarily disabling the following?
Open the Play Store app > Tap on the Menu button > Tap on Play Protect > Disable the option 'Scan device for security threats'.
Then try downloading and installing the APK one more time from the HSBC link?
Don't forget to enable the Play Protect option again after installing the app.0 -
Thank you, but unfortunately, as I said above, the app doesn't work. If I start it, it's just white screen with 'No results found' and a search field at the top. No buttons, nothing.Huynha said:

Out of desperation I opened play.google.com in the browser. No menus there, but I found HSBC app and tried to install it. It says there 'Install on more devices' , then only this J530F in the list. Then "HSBC UK Mobile Banking will be installed on your device soon". I don't know what this 'soon' means, but after tapping OK nothing happens. There is no HSBC app in the phone.0 -
If the app isn't in the Google Play store then it's either not compatible with the device or unavailable in the region. Lineage OS can sometime revive older devices but even the Samsung J7 (next model up) is discontinued.
A new phone or tablet is in order I'm afraid.1
