Attendance Allowance is not means tested but based on meeting clinical criteria.  If he is receiving end of life care people like MacmIllan will help. Depending on the circumstances it may be possible to apply on his behalf but AA is paid to him.

It will entirely depend on his personal care and supervision needs. If he needs help to wash, dress, get out of bed, eat, take medication, etc because of poor health and is past SPA then claiming AA is a possibility.

Here a is guide to AA:

Its quite a long form to fill in, and be sure to put all illnesses and issues. You can do it for him
I claimed for my father and they will phone you up to discuss it. He got the lower rate as he had a few falls due to heart issues and frailty but he didnt need night time care.

When you apply for Pension Credit your income is calculated. If you have a partner, your income is calculated together.

    Pension Credit tops up:

    • your weekly income to £182.60 if you’re single
    • your joint weekly income to £278.70 if you have a partner

If your income is higher, you might still be eligible for Pension Credit if you have a disability, you care for someone, you have savings or you have housing costs.

Long winded form that repeats itself numerous occasions. I did it for my mum when she was 88 and a few weeks later it landed in her account. No phone calls, nothing.

I claimed AA a year ago.
It is long winded and you repeat yourself numerous times, detailing the help you need for personal care and why you need it.

You can save and complete the form online.   The boxes for the answers are small so I typed them on additional sheets cross referencing back to the questions.  Make sure you include Question number, full name and National Insurance Number on each additional sheet.

I received the first payment into my bank account approximately 4 weeks later and a letter confirming the award a few days later.

Apparently it is very rare for DWP to do an assessment or ask any questions.

Receiving Attendance allowance can increase considerably any Pension Credit due under certain circumstances.

  • Don't  forget that it is the help that he needs rather than the help he gets that is relevant. Not necessarily an easy concept to grasp. But as an example let's say someone lives on their own and it takes them an hour or more to get themselves out of bed and get dressed. Clearly it is reasonable to draw the conclusion that they need help even though they don't get it. Probably sometimes hard to define the exact situation whereby help is "needed" but the form should be filled in on that basis.
