Move my old meters, or change to a smart meter?

Hi, I need to make space in my hallway to accommodate a new downstairs toilet. Can my old meters be moved outside, or would it make more sense to ask my energy supplier (So energy) if I can have a smart meter. At the moment I have a gas meter and an electric meter with cheaper night rate.

  • I'm not sure about other suppliers. But i know for Octopus Energy they can move meters free of charge, it just needs to be on the same wall, and within 1 meter. The DNO would come in the AM, take out the meters, move the supply, then Octopus would come in the PM to install new smart meters in the new space.

Anything on another wall, or more than 1 meter would be a chargeable job via the DNO.

If you want your meters moved to another wall, then you're going to have to pay for it.  It won't be your electricity and gas suppliers doing it, but your regional distribution companies for electricity and gas.  Expect the price to be hundreds of points per meter for a simple move, or more if they are digging trenches.

I'm not sure how switching to smart meters changes anything.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
