I guess the way the system is set up, it would maybe make it difficult but if you know the cheque number then surely not impossible.

Can you not work out what the cheque was for, and therefore how much it would be?

Or maybe one of the banking folks could advise what may happen if OP made up an amount but gave the correct cheque number? Where did you lose it? Is it likely to be presented (surely not within timescales if you lost it at home)?

  • unfortunelty i didnt lose it at home, i was in the city grrrr!!!
i threw away the paper work for the payment ( yes i know so stupid now), i dont see why they cant cancel , what would they do if someone lost a blank cheque???

Well, I guess if you'd lost a chequebook they could stop them all and they'd be blank because you wouldn't have written any.

Could you ask them to stop the rest of the book, starting from the chq no you lost?

Your bank can stop the cheque without an amount. All they need to do is enter the cheque number as the first and last number in a sequence (a bit like they do if you actually lost the whole cheque book).

There should be no extra charge for this - only their standard fee. Make sure you follow up the phone instruction with a letter confirming the loss - I recommend you hand deliver this and bring a spare copy which you ask the cashier to stamp to confirm receipt.

If you don't get any satisfaction from the cashier, ask to speak to the Manager or Supervisor. Don't let them fob you off with 'they are not available' - just say you will wait! It always works (I used to work in a bank so should know).

    Hope this helps

  • There should be no fee for a lost cheque or book.
I would agree that if OP made up an amount close to what the actual cheque was for with the exact date and cheque number - it would/should be flagged up by the bank's clearings as a 'partial match' and looked at by a human being.
If they were in doubt they should contact you , if they can't get hold of you they should return it anyway to be on the safe side.

I think that's just standard in their T&C's, probably more to cover any fees -sorry services charges - they charged you if they paid it initially and bounced other payments of yours before the human looked at the situation.
