Amazing Credit Card Deal

Was looking at applying for the BA Amex Card that comes with 70000 avios points which can be converted to nectar after 3 months and then downgrade the card.

Is there any drawbacks to this card?

Be aware of the £250 fee and 3k min spend in the first 3 months.

Which is refunded pro-rata upon cancellation. If you cancel at the end of month 3 you'll be refunded £187.50 - if you can get the spend done sooner you'll get more (but make sure the Avios are in your BA account before cancelling otherwise you'll forfeit them). You can bring spend forward (subject to personal cashflow, of course) by purchasing gift cards.
I don't get in to the whole airmiles game personally, but ignoring that -
70000 Avios = 93333 Nectar which is worth £466.66 when used at face value at Ebay, Sainsburys or Argos. Once you add on the 6000 Avios you'll get from regular spend toward your bonus you'll be over £500.

It is indeed a very good deal.

I'm looking at booking a holiday next month using the credit card costing over the 3k, How long does it take for the points to go into my account before I can cancel?

I think it happens shortly after the statement due date, so you might end up paying 2 months worth of annual fee.

Thanks, Is there a particular date in the month to apply to minimise the fee as I will be spending over 3k in 1 transaction  and will downgrade straightaway.

No, the statement date will be relative to the date your account opened. Amex can give you the specifics if you need them but I think the first statement is produced around 30 days after the account opens, and then the payment date with be some amount of days after that.

Pleased to confirm what WillPS posted based upon my own experience.

I’d like to add a warning just in case you’ve not checked. Make sure your holiday provider accepts Amex before you fix on purchasing the holiday as your qualifying spend.
  • I applied for the fee free Amex which offers 20000 Avios for a 1K spend.
I was slightly concerned that on my app I've got a 1000 Avios reward straight away and my spending is going towards another 5000 if I spend £1000 by April.
I've spoken to live chat a couple of times but they don't seem to know what I'm talking about !
Is this the normal procedure and the remaining 14000/15000 will be added once I hit my target spend, or has something gone wrong and I've got a less generous offer ?

Did you add a supplementary card by any chance soon after joining?

These often trigger bonuses which aren't very well publicised:

1000 Points seems to be the bonus presently.
