SSE to EDF transfer

I am currently transferring from SSE to EDF (to maintain my variable direct debit which SSE no longer do). The electricity account transferred promptly on January 5th and my smart meter readings are now shown on the EDF site. But the gas seems to be in limbo with the transfer to EDF not yet completed and my little smart meter box still suggesting the gas meter interfaces with SSE. SSE have already sent me my final bills for both electricity and gas. A chat with EDF the other day (via SMS text) suggests it could take over 28 days. They can't take any manual readings from me until the transfer is complete. Is this sort of delay normal and is there anything to do to speed it up?

  • Perfectly normal. The new supplier cannot take readings from your smart meter until the National databases have been updated and it has applied the bespoke security certificates to each of your meters. One of the key principles of smart metering is one meter: one supplier. Only the designated supplier can access your meters and no data is held by the DCC.
  • One month on. The gas meter has still not transferred to EDF and still showing registered to SSE. But the website is now showing the transfer 'complete' regardless and I am now able to submit readings. I have just received my first bill, it shows correct charges for the gas based on my submitted reading but has no charges or figures for the electric. Do I expect a separate bill for the electricity a bit later or is this an error. I must say I am a bit confused....

EDF bills Gas and Electricity separately -  have a look at the tariff details to see what the billing period is.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

For dual fuel accounts EDF bill once, not separately.

Usually they bill once, there might be a gas only or electrcity only bill in between if they have to "fix" their billing.

This may depend on how you define dual fuel. - and/or how the accounts started out. My Electric stated with the SoLR from GNE; gas SoLR from ZOG.  I get billed separately .  Elec is on a long fix with fixed monthly and 6 monthly reviews; Gas is monthly variable DD  and I submit monthly reads and get monthly bills.

  • I'd suggest not relying on what the IHD tells you too much - it will only change when (if!) the new supplier prompts it to do so, and this may well be after the actual switch has taken place.

  • Thanks for the comments. I believe I am dual fuel but it may be that they are going to send me separate bills for gas and electric, with this one being triggered by a gas reading I submitted earlier this month. We will wait and see what happens.... Whatever the IHD says they are not receiving readings from my gas meter (which worked fine with SSE) but they are getting the electric ones OK.

It looks as if EDF have finally managed to get things right. My gas meter successfully transferred in Mid March and is showing data on their site. I have just received a bill covering both electricity and gas, electricity since beginning of January and gas for the past month. Of course a large electricity bill as it covers three months but everything is now correct.

I see they have changed my smart meter reading frequency from daily to half hourly without telling me. Not too concerned, especially since they actually only read the data once per day, but maybe they will be inviting me to their save energy at specific time thing?
