New BT number from scratch?

How do you get the 'new number' from BT where you have moved in and the previous occupant has rented their line from BT and taken it (their number) with them when they moved? Can BT charge anything except line rental in order to 'reconnect' the line? Aren't replacement numbers pre-allocated in such circumstances?

Thanks

BT will just allocate you a new number in these circumstances.

Providing the line has only been stopped and the wiring back to the exchange ,master socket ,etc are still working they should connect you free of charge. It's only if some of the wiring etc has been reused/removed that you would be charged a full connection fee.
