Zettle - terminal or own smart phone

We've recently bought a zettle card reader and dock but did not take the option of the 'terminal' which appears to be basically a smartphone. I can get a sim-free smart phone for much less than the zettle terminal  - anyone with any experience of using Zettle got any thoughts on this? I'd rather not use my personal phone.

It really depends on your setup, where you will be selling, size of your inventory,  if you use bar codes, if you need a cash draw or paper receipts or...

We mainly use ours at markets, there will just be one of us selling and there wont be a PoS setup so we just use a phone and the card reader.

If you have a shop etc, multiple staff, cash draw, formal till point then I can see the appeal to a better setup and most the tap rooms around this area are using them.

No, just a simple one-person at markets - no bar codes or anything like that. So any android phone is fine then - I can just get a cheap handset ?

We have a Zettle behind a members' bar, connected to an old Android phone of mine (no SIM in it, just connected to wi-fi). It has been working fine for the last year and most members have got the hang of it. I do feel though that a cheap tablet in a stand would, for us, be better than a fiddly old phone.

Why not use your personal phone? You just install the Zettle app and it's all very simple. I've only had it fail to work twice in a year or so when the Bluetooth failed to synch with the phone, or vice versa.
What I like about Zettle is that there is no monthly fee involved: if you don't use it, you pay nothing.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
