Marmalade New Driver Insurance

That dreaded time when you're 17 year old son passes his driving test
I had a policy for my car which included him as a learner. When I rang to upgrade to full licence they asked for another £2,083 for the remaining 7 months. I was about to go ahead with the Marmalade policy (described by them as a bolt on policy) but when I phoned my insurer they said I could not go ahead with the Marmalade policy as this would be dual insurance and it could invalidate my policy. That's last thing I want to do. Has anybody had recent experience of this? From what I've read online it's not illegal to have 2 policies. I'm waiting for them to confirm where in the T's & C's it prevents me getting the Marmlade insurance for him. Do I have to get him removed from my current or would that just be a void named driver. I checked with another insurer and they are happy for me to do the Marmalade bolt on so is my only option to cancel my existing one completely and start again? Thanks

If you dont remove him from your current policy then you'd have to pay the £2,083 making the bolt on policy redundant.Alibobbs007 said:That dreaded time when you're 17 year old son passes his driving test

Sounds like an agent not knowing what they are talking about so good call on asking them to point out to the clause they are referring to. There wont be one and it will be ok to have the main policy for you and the bolt on for him though bolt ons will only cover accident claims so if he takes your car to a dodgy area and it gets keyed or stolen etc then thats a claim against your policy.
Specialty policies can have non-standard terms so make sure you read and understand the bolt on policy properly... not seen this particular product but I've seen others with limitations on use (eg wont cover commuting) or time of day (wont cover late nights at the weekend)0
