You dont say what the charge is per hour if £10p/h then its very cheap if £100 p/h then its very expensve, but really this is a day job also he may need to test the circuits if he needs to a bit more information is needed to really say if its a fair sum
Thanks - he's charging £25 per hour (in the North of England)

He's certainly not over charging. In this area (South West) it could easily be twice that figure.   I would have expected him to charge a day rate, if for no other reason than to avoid the situation in the original question.  Is the OP going to stand over him with a stopwatch?  Does his time include travelling time?

Wow thats very cheap to be fair (i pay approx £50p/h for the chap i use and thats in west yorkshire) having said that £25x8=£200 which for the north of england is not bad, but this really is not a job thats done per hour really this is a day job

My electrician dosent really do per hour jobs as such unless its a simple job which will take an hour then he has charge a min charge of an hour for just that our

but the quote you have is very very good providing the chap is good at what he does and has the skills required to carry out the work

People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

I'm currently paying my electrician £230 a day in the East Midlands   :#
    Hi
Not even in London would I pay that, labour only for a day rate for work something similar to OP

They may work 8 hours, that equates to almost 30 quid an hour - most people in factories and retail do 40 hours I think - for 40 hours work they would be getting 1200 quid gross a week

Always break down the figures and decide.

NB: If I am having 1/2 jobs done I tell them to stick their day rate and give me a solid price - often this equates in day rate going out of the window and if they quot me a hundred and complete the job in an hour, I'm happy with that as  others may quote an hourly rate of 20/25 quid but spend the day messing around. So shop around and check their reviews. The more flexible you are better rates you get

People working in factories don't have the substantial costs associated with running a company, however, so it's not a sensible comparison.

I'm paying £60 (West Midlands)    Don't forget somehow they have to cover the costs incurred for the jobs they don't get;  the time spent ordering materials and journeys back and forth to the wholesalers;  the bad payers

PS  Your electrician is charging you £25 -  for that he runs a van, several thousands £ worth of kit,  keeps his certifications up to date;  pays an accountant ; National Insurance, Tax, 3rd party insurance     ............    He's a fool.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Why is he a fool for charging £25? He could be newly qualified and building his business up, or maybe that’s the average rate where they are, any number of things.
Your paying £60 p/h  it’s debatable who the fool?

£200 for the quoted work, would have said that was a bargain. I’m no electrician but reckon that’s a days work, whether that be a 6 or 8 hour day
