Then I received email they tell me they must see my passport. I ask what is this about for a saving account. Never anyone ask me ID for saving account.Savings accounts are subject to AML checks. Passport is one of the best docs for satisfying the requirements.I said I already have Skipton accounts why check now? Customer service said 'oh right'. I said I have mortgage with you. You give me MORTGAGE already and now you ask me for passport for basic saving account. Are you stupid Skipton? It is unlikely they are stupid. We are currently on the 5th level of AML legislation and things being done today have to meet the current requirements. Those done in the past may have met earlier requirements. Or indeed, pre-date any requirements.
Plus, many banks operate independent systems for classes of business. So, just because a mortgage clerk may have checked many years ago, doesnt mean the clerk in the savings arm can see it. Plus, that clerk in the savings arm should not rely on other staff members doing their job correctly unless it is visible and authenticated.Customer service can not agree he is recorded on phone so he only say it must be computer rule.AML legislation has nothing to do with computers. Now I ask do you need my passport. He said no. So you don't need my passport for other saving accounts and mortgage but if I open new you need yes? Each product and sometimes each top up falls under AML legislation and checks.
Most firms will use electronic checks nowadays. However, if you fail those then reverting to manual checks is the norm.

Why would any organisation want photo ID for someone they are not going to meet in person?

Skipton BS are clueless. I applied last year and got the ID thing. I did nothing and they closed the account. I applied again this year and the account is up and running. Same account type and same details. Nothing changed.

Nothing changed at *your* end, but something might have changed at the other end. For example, you’ve been at your address a year longer, so score higher on whatever criteria they use for electronic verification; or the dataset they use for that purpose has been changed or updated.Verification often prompts cries of “useless institution” when further ID is requested, “but I passed without quibble at competitor” or “nothing’s changed from one year to the next so they’re inconsistent.” I know this from experience. Different organisations will be working from different datasets and processes, but it doesn’t make them useless or incompetent. Quite apart from anything else, a standardised protocol would, I’d imagine, be a hackers’ paradise.
Some of the language used on these forums can be quite intemperate or disparaging for these relatively minor matters, eg when impatient to see rates rising at an institution you save with. It would be better to reserve highly critical language for instances of really poor customer service, over-zealous procedures or downright incompetence.11
