Passport Application for a Child

Options
I'm applying for a passport for my son.

It wants me to send his birth certificate off, but we were not married when he was born so the birth certificate has my maiden name.

Do I also need to send off my marriage certificate with it?

Thanks!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Yes you will have to show the link between your name on his birth certificate and the name you enter at the parents details section.
  • After you married, did you re-register the birth? I didn’t know this was a thing until recently, but there is a legal obligation to. I don’t know if doing that means you wouldn’t need to send you marriage certificate, although it would cost you £11 for a new birth certificate.

Actually that's a really good question. I remember being told we had to re-register the birth but due to starting a new job I cannot for the life of me remember if we did that! How do I find out??

I've now sent my marriage certificate off with DS's birth certificate so hopefully all will be fine!

I'd contact the registrars office and ask them.
  • If you had re-registered, it would show on the birth certificate I believe, assuming you purchased a new certificate at the time.

In which case I think perhaps we didn't re-register his birth as the certificate we have I am quite sure is the original one from when he was born.

Does it matter if his birth is not re-registered?!?! Is there a purpose behind it?

  • I think it is an old law that has just not been changed. It is to do with safeguarding the child in any inheritance issues, to show that they are now a child of the marriage.

i can’t imagine it affects anything in real life though, but the local registry office would be able to help.

    Amazingly, the passport arrived today!

It took just 7 days from posting the documents until the passport arrived in the post! This was the standard service as it wasn't urgent, so I guess they have cleared their backlogs!

yes I had similar experience last week.
Posted the old passport back which arrived at the passport office last Monday and received the new passport on Friday, just FOUR days later.
