E-On chasing estimated bills!

E-On are currently chasing me for £400 on a bill from an account last year right as prices started going up. When I moved in I didn’t have access to the gas meter at all which was not my fault and although I tried to submit a reading at some point afterwards near the start of the year I’m pretty sure I couldn’t as it was the wrong meter. (Was a building of 7 flats so 7 meters and was never told and couldn’t find out which one was mine)
Because of this they used estimated readings all year but somehow after moving out the landlord has done it and now they’re after me. As a student already struggling with my current bill what can I do about this previous one? E-On are already ripping me off again with my new place, would rather not have to send them even more..

What makes you think this is a rip off ?
If Eon have got a correct reading from when you moved in and when you moved out - what's wrong ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill2 -
They now somehow have an actual reading from the move out but as said in op it was not possible to get a proper reading at the move in which wasn’t my fault. So the start point was estimated and usage all year was estimated. Since start point was estimated its still likely the bill is incorrect0

I expect the landlord gave them a starting reading. We always did, otherwise we might end up paying for the tenant's electricity.1

You bills have meter numbers on them to match to the meters you read from.Life in the slow lane0

They will have had a final reading from the tenant before you, which is the same as your start reading.
And now they got a final reading from the landlord for you, and they are charging you for the difference, which is what you used. There is nothing estimated about the final bill.0 -

It's your responsibilty to give the supplier a reading when you move in and another one when you move out (and ideally one a month whilst you are there).
If you don't of didn't do this then you can easily end up paying for the previous tenant's energy if he didn't do it either and/or the new tenant's energy if he didn't as well.
The supplier isn't going to let you off, just because you might have found it difficult to do.
It was down to you to get it sorted and in the absence of any readings, then the best the supplier can do is make a guess or use readings based on info given by someone else. Its a tough lesson but you need to do stuff yourself or at least check that its been done, rather than hoping that someone else will do it for you.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
How many months were you there ?
How many kWh ?
What wss the heating ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
