I lived with both my pensioner age parents, my dad sadly died two months ago and now there is just my mum and me, she is missing a lot per month due to no longer having his pension to help. She owns the house and pays the council tax. We are eligible for Second Adult Rebate. I went to the Dorset council page and selected Second Adult Rebate to try and reduce our council tax costs but it just takes me in circles. Anyone able to answer the questions ?

1. What sort of evidence will I need to provide to prove we are eligible ?

2. Is there any way to sign up online for North Dorset ? I click on the link but it just sends me to the benefits selection page and then sends me back again when I click on Second Adult Rebate link.

3. My mum doesn't get Pension Credits as she apparently has too much in savings going by the online calculator, but what is the savings limit ? It doesn't matter if she only gets a penny in credits because it comes with the free TV licence benefit even if just getting a penny a week so that is worthwhile.

Thanks for any help.

Will be easier to visit the council or phone them to resolve this.

Unless someone visiting this website happens to know how Dorset or similar council deals with this specific issue. See if anyone answers your post by Sunday night and if not, contact the Council next week.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

There isn’t a savings limit for Pension Credit. For every £500, or part thereof, over £10,000 Pension Credit is reduced by £1/week.

Does she claim any disability benefits? If so, do you claim any benefits?

If there is any entitlement to Pension Credit she would be entitled to full Council Tax Support (subject to  any non dependent deduction) and the Second Adult Rebate would be irrelevant.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

check if your mother can inherit any of your dad's state pension.  It is paid automatically, if due, but can take a while to be processed.

If you visit Dorset Council in person there is a reception desk and they will tell you they cannot answer any enquiries and point you to some phones to talk to them on the phone.   :D. That was my experience about 4 years ago after driving 19 miles to get there.
  • In my experience with local council and council tax, they will do anything to get out of giving you a discount.
I was self employed and went in for surgery. 16 weeks off work.
Called on day one before surgery and asked for paperwork to claim benefits and council tax.
Turns out the council sent the wrong form.
called after surgery on left hand / wrist, ( Im a left hanger ) asked what I needed to do to sort it out.
Fill out a different form, how I asked as in plaster from shoulder to fingers.
Just come in to the office and we will fill out the form.
Walked 3.5 miles to the office and got my ticked and waited to be seen.
Called in under a minute, explained what needed doing and told I don’t have time to fill that form out do it your self.
    Asked how when left handed.
Told to wait until another member of staff came down.
After 25 minutes waiting and watching her drink 2 cups of coffee and serve no one.
I asked for a manager to make a complaint.
suddenly they could fill it out. Took 4 minutes.
Now the best bit, I wanted it backdated to when I first called.
    Reasons for backdated claim surgery.
Denied my claim, even stating reasons allowed for backdated claim are surgery etc.
I wrote back asking if they could read, as first line in the appeal. Due to hand stroke wrist surgery.
Appeal granted. All this for £37.62p of credit.
    Don’t give up Fight,Fight,Fight.
    You are now at WAR.
