Retiling paramount partition

I’ve removed the tiles in the ensuite to discover the wall are made of cardboard :D the walls were skimmed then tiled. Tiles are gone but there’s plenty of adhesive left on the walls. How do I get them smooth for retiling? Presumably won’t be able to chisel the adhesive without trashing the plasterboard. Guessing I can’t overboard as there’s no studs, just 35 x 35 mm at the joints. Do I have to cut into walls every 600 mm to slot in 2 x 3 and re board? will have to get new door frame and it will shrink the room.

I've never done.it myself, but have heard of people ripping off the board and cardboard core, fixing a 3x2 studwork frame, and re-boarding.

I was thinking along similar lines but not ripping everything out, just slots for the 3x2. I didn’t want to shrink the room and get new door frame etc so had a go at removing adhesive. It’s rock hard but managed to scrape it off with wall paper steamer. There’s gouges to the brown paper, internet says to use joint compound but I’m thinking adhesive as that’s stronger, or is that unnecessary? Just want to make walls strong as I can. Tiles are 13kg per square metre.

Use a multitool to remove any high lumps of old adhesive, then use tile primer on the wall.
then just spot and dab each tile on the wall. 5 dabs on each tile Use powered adhesive , not ready mixed. Only mix a small batch at a time at first as it goes off quicker.
A thankyou is payment enough .

If you have a small bit of room to play with you could dot and dab Wedi-board, Jacko-board etc over the top. It would also make the walls waterproof if there is a shower in there.
