Claiming Ni credits retrospectively

Does anyone have any experience of claiming NI credits retrospectively? I see Martin Lewis says you can claim them if you were entitled to jobseeker's allowance but didn't claim it at the time. I didn't claim it at the time (many years ago) and I had a good reason for not doing so. However, it seems near impossible to contact anyone by phone at GOV UK to discuss it. There are just long recorded messages or you are cut off. If anyone has been through the process and can advise the best way to claim NI credits in the circumstances I'd be interested to know. Thank you.

I can't seem how you can evidence your job seeking activity retrospectively in order to get the NI credits. Will be interested to see if anybody comes up with reply with experience.

Having read the The Social Security (Credits) Regulations 1975 for another thread, I agree I can't see how either.
There maybe other benefits you can prove retrospectively, but can't see how JSA would be one of them.

  • Martin Lewis in his guide about considering buying national insurance years lists ways of plugging gaps in your NI record and JS allowance is one of them. Under step 2 he says 'You are/were eligible for it but not claiming it'. That's really what got me thinking.

I understood that but I just can’t see how. Hopefully if someone knows they will share.
