I can highly recommend Octopus if you wish to change supplier.  You might not like their techy philosophy though, but it is what gives almost complete control over your account online and makes them very responsive on Twitter (e-mails take a bit longer for a response, but a longer form allows for explanation of more complicated issues).

If you were to decide to move to them, make sure to find a referral code for £50 credit (every customer has our own).

    A few points...
If you open a savings account with a bank or building society you can get close to 3% interest, or even 5% with Nationwide Flex Direct if you jump through a few hoops, so on £1500 that would generate annual interest of around £40 -  £75.  Why do you want it to go to British Gas rather than to you?
If I log in to my account, I could top it up at any time.  I'm on MVDD so YMMV, but worth a check anyway.
No, I don't work for BG or any other energy company.

It's more likely its the BBC that are currently lying mistaken saying they are the most expensive way to pay.

Its OFGEM telling all of them not to hold large Credits.

While I don't put it past journalists to make things up as rage-bait, on this occasion I'd be inclined to think it is a genuine mistake - historically prepayment has tended to be more expensive, they just didn't do their due diligence to check whether that was still the case.
