How can I check that my Gas and Electric meters are set at the right tariff and are not charging me more than I should be paying? I inherited these old style meters after a council house exchange 3 years ago, previously I had normal meters for 32 years and never got into debt.

Search online using the name of your energy supplier(s) and terms such 'What do the screens on my prepayment meter mean?'
Did you get a new card or key in your own name when you moved in?  If not, you may have paid debt incurred by the previous tenant.
  • Thank you, I will have a look at that, they are old not a smart meter.

Yes, I did get a new card and key as I was with a different supplier.

The tariff is on the menu if you run through by pressing the blue button on the electric meter..I can't remember off hand which screen it's on but look for something around 34 p kWh .you can access the menu to see all info you may need bit need the key in to see debt and debt repay rate  screens

Why not upgrade to smart meters? Then you can switch to credit meter mode without charge.
You don't wait to request a new card/key upon a change of supplier, but when you occupy the property.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thank you all for your help, I have found the tariffs and standing charges and they are correct. It was more my gas I wanted to check.

I have been trying to get smart meters for 3 years and to switch to standard meters, not prepayment. For a while now I've been told there are no installation appointments in this area and before that the reason was the pandemic, I will keep trying.
