Your justification that some benefits are not included because they are not 'guaranteed' or 'long term' is undermined by the fact that employment isn't often guaranteed in any meaningful way in this day and age either. Jobs for life is a thing of the past.

Jobs for life is a thing of the past.I would suspect the difference is more the perception of self-sufficiency; somebody earning is more likely to seek other employment if their current employment ends, and statistically they're more likely to get it than someone who has not been earning for an extended period (sadly).2
