Recording from HDD to DVD? HELP!

My hubby bought us a new fangled HDD player with a built in DVD Recorder!
Ive got some stuff on there that I would like to record onto DVD now that the HD is getting full.
But I am confused at all the settings. There is XP / SP / LP / SLP / SEP / Auto.
I tried Auto - but it only managed to record about 20 mins of a 60 min programme!
What if I want to record a 1 hr 10 min programme onto DVD - how do I know what option to select? (without experimenting and wasting about 10 blandk DVDs!)

What type of dvd is it?? Some will only record onto disk in the same quality it was saved in so if everything is saved in the highest quality you may well only get 20-50mins on a disk0

You really need to dig out the instruction manual for the recorder! If I had to guess, the range XP --- SEP determines how much the recorder will compress the content to try to fit it on the DVD. If that's right then SEP (Super extended play? - more guessing) will give the most compression and fit more onto the DVD.
However... as a rough rule of thumb, MPEG2 recordings taken off Freeview take around 2 to 2.5 Gbytes per hour. As a standard single-layer DVD can take around 4.7 Gbytes, you ~should~ get more around 2 hours per disk without any additional compression.
Are you sure you haven't used a CD-R disk by mistake?0 -
Definately used a DVD

Wil try to make sense of the 90 page manual0 -
Yes I had the same problem with my LiteOn, when recording at top quality there is too much data to fit on a DVD. I now use LP (Long Play) on mine as it doubles the storage capacity of the hard disk, and I can't see any loss of quality.
I would suggest you start with this and see how you go, you may feel you need better quality and then you can take it up a notch to SP (Standard Play) but it should be fine.0 -
On my JVC box I use the "just" option to copy a program from HDD to DVD.
It is called "just" because, it works out the quality and length of the program on the HDD and then calculates the bit-rate to record it at so that it "just" fits onto the DVD.
