Prepayment meter final bill

Hello!
Newbie here, so please forgive me if this is a tired old subject. We have just moved out of a property that had a pre-payment gas meter. When we left, we had £97 credit showing on the meter, but rather than sending me a nice cheque, I have received a final bill for £111.
The energy company, SSE, have told me this is because we haven't been paying a standing charge since 2019 when they took over the account from the previous provider. I find this really hard to believe, so I was looking for any thoughts or if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Pretty sure they cant bill you as far back as 2019 if they haven't sent you a bill previously for it.0
