Have you applied for DLA for child waiting ADHD assessment

My 8 yo DS is waiting an assessment for ADHD.
I have been advised that we should consider applying for DLA for him but i'm not sure if we need to wait for the assessment first?
The assessment is being driven by school, I have not spoken with the GP about it.
Has anyone else made a successful claim while waiting for the assessment?
What have you been awarded from your claim?
TIA.

You don't need a diagnosis to be entitled to DLA for your child. You just need to prove they have considerable more care and/or attention needs than a child the same age who doesn't have a disability.I don't think you can compare another child to yours because everyone will be different, even with the same conditions. There's a guide here for help filling out the form. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/disability-living-allowance/help-with-your-dla-claim/help-with-dla-form/

We applied for DLA before ASD diagnosis for our son and tbh this was for the best as we were waiting 3 years for the assessment! We were accessing services before diagnosis though - OT & SALT - and had reports from them to include. If the school is helping you to get the assessment you should have paperwork from them indicating he has additional needs, which will support your application. Both of the above websites linked are great help when filling in the forms. I'd say to be very realistic on the forms - I hated spelling out the difficulties he had with day-to-day life, but they do need that detailed information to know the needs are greater than peers.
