How long has the rug been down?  I'm wondering if it's not a stain but simply where the carpet has faded in direct sunlight, apart from the area that was covered by the rug?  Might be a possibility if the rug has been there for a while.

The carpet has been down 4 years and is grey colour definitely not bleached by sun
  • I would hire a rug doctor from Asda/B&Q etc and give all the carpet a good going over, that usually lifts out heavy duty stains so hopefully this will lift out.
Other option is to return the new rug and buy another one the same size as the old one

The rest of the carpet is like new no stains/marks so the only part that would need a clean is the rug stain, the rug we bought is 10cm shorter on length/width finding one same size is easy its the pattern/colour which is the hard part

Yes it's a pain but if it's staining and you've tried scrubbing it by hand with a carpet cleaning spray then the next step is an industrial cleaner.

FWIW, I think you'd be amazed at how much dirt comes out of the carpet. I don't allow shoes in the house, have no pets or kids. I clean mine every year and the dust and dirt which comes out is unbelievable.

I've used Rug Doctors in the past and I've also hired people to do the job. The professionals have always left a much nicer carpet than I ever could with a rug doctor, mainly because they have a better cleaner (usually mounted in their van with a long hose into your house). It's worth getting quotes.

No, you can hire loads of different ones (the likes of HSS have them, and a local tool hire place may also do them).  Rug Doctor is just one of the well-known brands, and tends to be convenient as you can hire them from most large supermarkets amongst other places.
As Mutton Geoff says, a professional company will likely give better results, though you'll probably get a perfectly acceptable result from DIY-ing it.
