Are EON no longer pushing Smart Meters?

  • You can check the certification period on your meter here:
Then you will know if they are being honest about it needing replaced due to age.
  • I asked BG for one a year ago, still waiting so I think they have given up now. Couldn't log into the account with out being told how wonderful they are, never see that message now.

Also after all the forced pre payment chatter last week I'm not sure I want one now, I am at no risk of that ever happening, but you never know what is round the corner.

Having an analogue meter offers no protection. Suppliers with Ofgem’s approval have for many years been allowed to switch consumers that are in debt to a pre-payment meter. It requires Court approval. If necessary, the supplier will just change an analogue credit meter for a pre-payment model.

Yes, it is topical at the moment because the Government wants to appear to be on the side of consumers. It knows that bad debt will increase.

If you are forcibly switched from credit meter to PPM while on a smart meter, it's much cheaper for the customer as they will not incur the cost of the warrant of entry, bailiffs, meter engineer, dog handler etc.

No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

And any damage caused while the forced entry is being made!

    Hi OP

When does the fixed term end?
What happens if you move after the fixed term ends as part of it was the smart meter?

Our supplier is still chasing people to get these meters. However, I'm not sure if its bluster (as I have not taken up the offer) and the appointment is months down the road or it depends on where you live and who has supplies of these meters

    Thanks

You might manage to add to the delay if you are never available when they want to book someone to fit the meter(s).  Unless your meters are some where accessible to the general public you'll have to be at home to let them in.  So you're at work, on holiday, whatever....

My electric meter is broke at the moment.  Eon are replacing it, finally, later this month.  No appointments were available until recently.

Apparently one needs to be at home even if the meter is in an accessible external box.
(Perhaps to demonstrate the IHD or possibly more likely to allow home owner to do a controlled shut-down and start up of appliances and systems?)

Admittedly my external meter box isn't, strictly, in a public space but there's no gates or other obstacles to reach it on the property.
  • Probably to ensure that everything is working correctly after the interruption to service, and to handover the IHD I would imagine.
