Well a month after getting the new gas meter and dual band comms hub, Shell are still getting the gas readings ok, but now aren't getting any data from the electric meter and have requested readings from it?!

I'd like Octopus to update my own SMETS1 electric meter and install a new gas meter to make it smart, but given the issues with these meters, I'm not sure it's worth chasing them up about it. Weirdly I know someone who has SMETS1 smart meters installed by British Gas fairly early on in the smart meter rollout, and after a few changes of supplier they've been back working again without ever experiencing any drops in data.

SMETS1 meters are being updated OTA to enable them to connect to the DCC network. Why do you want a new gas meter when a new one has already been installed along with a dual-band comms hub?

Because this ongoing issue with Shell & the smart meters they installed is in another person's house (I've been helping them with the complaint), I've been saying that all along? I've said I'd like Octopus to fix my own SMETS1 meter (which has already been updated to connect to the DCC network but its comms have always been hit and miss and now hasn't sent data for months) & install a smart gas meter but this carry on is putting me off. Two different suppliers, two different houses.

The comms hub is the responsibility of the DCC not the supplier. If your SMETS1 meter has been enrolled onto the DCC network then I doubt that Octopus will be willing to replace it. The most likely reason for intermittent connectivity is a poor connection to the DCC network because of location.

That is my problem too, octopus and my previous supplier failed consistently to get readings from my gas meter which is on a right angled wall from the hub with four courses of bricks and various kit in the house so I resigned myself to send manual readings for gas. All I need is for octopus to get my export MPAN sorted , won't tell you why I left ovo after waiting for them to do the same 13 weeks and no movement (oops I have now told you) , I am hopefull octopus may sort it soon ..... so far I have exported 250kWh for zero return.

Different networks. The gas meter connects to the gas proxy meter in the comms hub using a home area network established by the comms hub. The comms hub connects to the DCC network via a wide area network and a mobile (O2) or UHF radio connection.

Your gas meter connectivity issue can be resolved with a dual-band comms hub and a dual-band gas meter.

Getting an export MPAN depends on how quickly your DNO responds to the supplier request.

Just an update on the saga of this customer and their issues with smart meters fitted back in September 2022.

Contacted the supplier as had been agreed (after they had 3 months of readings to work with) to request re-calculation of the cancelled gas bills. These bills were estimated due to a faulty gas meter (blank display and no readings showing on the IHD) and they then took 4 months to exchange it. They replied to say that they had got readings from the faulty meter (which I had already told them had suddenly started recording readings in Jan or Feb) and had already billed using those readings, so they didn't need to recalculate and new meter is working so bills all up to date.

Checked back on the bill in question, and in the same month they cancelled the previously estimated bills, they had indeed billed for the reading on the meter that hadn't worked for most of the time it was installed. The result is one very happy customer as they've had cheaper than they expected gas bill for the winter!
