Can you defer claiming JSA?

Options
Hi,

If I were made redundant tomorrow and paid 12 weeks notice period in lui, can I defer seeking JSA until mid April?

Long story short:

I have a foreign holiday (paid for) in early April.

I have income protection insurance that says I need to sign up to the job centre to claim (understandable).

I do have holiday insurance, but I'd rather go. I know how that sounds...

I've not actually been put on notice/consultancy but it's an imminent possibility.

Yes you can. I waited to claim after being made redundant because I wanted a month off without being hassled to job search.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Thankyou. If it happens I'll give them a ring to see if it's got a limit.

I checked insurance and I can't claim from them during the lui notice anyway.

(I don't particularly want to be out of work so will start the job hunt immediately, might cost the government/insurance people less fingers crossed)

New style JSA would have to be closed if you left UK and New claim made when you returned to UK. So it makes sense to only claim when you returned to UK.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

    Thanks

I also found something starting you needed to have contributed 26x  lower earnings limit NI contributions (1 of last two full tax years) and 50x over last 2 full years.

    Could be old info

(I'm fine on these, just mentioning it in case someone else has same question.)

That's right. The one thing to be aware of with these rules if thinking of deferring a claim for JSA is exactly whcih years are gonig to be used. DWP advance their 'benefit year' in the first  week of the calendar year (I think on the Monday, I can;t remember).
So for example, if you'd applied for JSA just before Xmas last year, the years they will be looking at to see if your NI record qualifies you wil lbe tax years 2019-20 and 2020-21.  If you waited to now (mid-January), after the 'benefit year' has changed, then they;d look at 2020-21 and 2021-22 instead.
This can make a difference to whether you qualify or not.

         Yes, you can apply .

However, if you have only worked from June 2021 to August 2022, you may not have met the required 2 (tax) years NI requirements.

Alternatively, if your savings are under £16k you could apply for Universal Credit
