I've just had a similar situation - car was in for a fault fixing at main dealer and they misdiagnosed leading to car needing an uneconomic engine repair - effectively writing the car off.

They agreed to buy car off us at above WBAC price and left us with their courtesy car for a week after they'd exhausted efforts to find us an acceptable replacement.

I suspect the length of time will depend on whether it's a main dealer of somewhere smaller and the level of interest they have in retaining your future custom

Wait until you know if the car is written off then look for a replacement if it is. The insurer takes some weeks paying you and you'll have the hire car until at least then. So you've plenty of time to look for another car if needed.

If we do have a week or 2 between confirmation of write off and payment of settlement that would be perfect. Might be worth us drawing out the settlement amount "haggle" :-)

As suggested by onashoestring we put a plan B in place so that she can get to work.

Depending if you are claiming off your insurance or the third party's you may find that they just send out whatever they believe the vehicle value was to start the clock ticking on the car hire ending.

Generally you are entitled to keep the car for 7 days from receiving the settlement... we used to do 10 days from the day we raised the payment request as we paid by cheque and would never 100% know when it hit the doormat.

    Quick update.

I've just spoken to the garages insurance company and they confirm that I will be able to keep the hire car for 7 days after settlement has been paid (assuming that is that the car is written off).

Thanks again all for your input.
