That link demonstrates quite clearly that it's more about the effect of a condition than a specific diagnosis - some of the examples given would certainly apply to autistic people depending on their specific profile of abilities.

[I'm actually surprised, from the examples given the bar for severe mental impairment sounds MUCH lower than I would have thought.]

Thanks. I'll be quite honest and have never really understood the criteria for this. My daughter has ASD and a learning disability and have never thought to claim this for her. Maybe i should look into this. We are the only 2 adults in the house so i'm not sure how this would work, if at all.

Obviously I don't know much about this area but from what you've said in the past about your daughter's understanding of money, it sounds like she really ought to qualify.

I have emotionally unstable personality disorder and social phobia diagnosed and get this. My GP supported it due to how I am socially. In everyday situations with professionals or strangers I just agree with them no matter what they say. Thankfully I have relatives that advocate for me and offer the necessary support.

I think it’s less about the label and more about the impact it has on you. I work with people with mental health problems, and the people who have been in and out of hospital under section are more likely to qualify in my experience. You are going to need evidence from a medical professional, I would expect. Is your GP or anyone else fully aware of the difficulties that your face? It’s not going to apply to everyone with autism so it’s about showing how your  autism impacts on you in your day-to-day life.
But whoever said it was primarily for dementia was wrong.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

We were awarded smi reduction due to hubbys autism. But the GP just stamped the form no alterations. Can you see a different GP at your practice?
I could, I'm just afraid that if the GP I actually speak to regularly felt the need to alter the form that another wouldn't understand me or how I work quite as well.

I have never been sectioned but I did have the crisis team visit me in November because I really wasn't coping well. I speak to my GP and the mental health lady (can't remember her formal title) on a monthly basis and have done for the past 29 months (recent UC tribunal) or so, so they are aware of certain things but I rarely leave the house and 99% of our conversations are over the phone so there's only so much I remember to say. I've also got long covid so my memory isn't great these days.

I have severe social anxiety so I rarely leave my house and I can definitely relate when it comes to agreeing to things... It's more when people are annoyed with me though. I tend to just recede into myself and agree to avoid the conflict.

I always thought that this reduction was only for people with dementia so thank you so much for posting about this as I think we could be entitled to it.
  • I have Mild intellectual disabilities and schizoaffective disorder and get this. I have been sectioned 14 times though.
