A few of this week's top threads

Whether through wisdom, humour or usefulness, these are some of the threads that stole the show this week:"

I clicked the one about paying for insurance for 30 years and it had 1 reply and 57 views, how is that in the "best of" list?

    Hullo @ashe,

It's not the most popular threads, but ones I find interesting. Often they're threads that have only just been started.

If you see any new ones you find interesting for any reason, please drop 'em here.

    Thanks,

Have a look at the photos @Miró posted of Daphne the duck who is incubating eggs just outside her front door. They're among the latest in this thread Shop Charity Store in '24! - Page 29 — MoneySavingExpert Forum

I've collated some images (Fllckr) of trials I've done over the years to clear snow & deliver a dry pavement without the need for salt/grit (& the mess & damage this can deliver)
Basically as soon as the snow has fallen shovel & brush it off the pavement before it gets compacted by (foot) traffic. Usually the low relative humidity and gentle breeze will see the residual water evaporating to leave paving dry and reduce the risk of any ice forming
Councils might also save a fortune by deploying their  mini street sweepers to brush away/hoover up fresh snow with street patrols, a they already do on Copenhagen, and dump any snow swept up directly into a nearby river - pewrhaps using the snow gates that were used 200 years ago when snow was shovelled on to horse drawn carts, and tipped into the rivers
Regular bus routes can also be cleared as snow falls by fitting stiff nylon brushes to the 18T buses to keep the carriageway pavements clear

I'm trying to get a MobilityMakeover delivered - showing how many households can save up to £6000 per year through NOT owning a car, and knowing how to buy their transport like they buy energy or broadband
I have been using new electric cars for past 6 years, available 24/7 from on street hire bays from £5/hour for small basic saloon to £9/hour for a huge van that can take 5+ metre lengths of timber
I also use a folding Brompton bike, where I helped to develop the Brompton Hire offer, which now included long term leasing deals as well as 24/7 hire from the Brompton Dock units, appearing close to many rail & coach stations (but the bureaucratic & costly issues of getting then on a Network Rail site usually mean you'll fined them just outside!)
My 60 years of working in transport & problem solving also means that I know fares pricing (ORCATS) which delivers a GLC-LDS fare 50% cheaper on a specific route, plus the train & coach combinations that get around the 14 HOIUR hole in train services between London & Scotland on Saturday nights
