British Gas - Error with new billing system

I was previously with People Energy and was moved to British Gas when they went bust.  I have just received my quarterly bill (BG do not invoice monthly) and was horrified to see that my gas bill was £661.53 and electric was £360.11 for one month!! I went to online chat and they advised this was because my bill was for 40 days rather than 30 and that was because I was placed onto the new system, my meter readings were actual so the bill was correct!  After having a melt down about how on earth was I going to afford it, I looked in more detail at my bill and saw that the total amounts did not add up and that an adjustment was also added to the total which made no sense.  After spending over an hour on the phone it transpires that British Gas have a major issue with their new billing system, the bills are wrong and they are not going to put a message on the website or send out new bills.  I said that they must be getting lots of calls about this and the customer service lady said yes they were inundated with calls about it!  My bills should be £261.84 gas and £245.18 electric so you can see that is a huge difference from the original bill that I was sent.  I think this needs to be made public so people don't suffer the stress that I have just had for 24 hours wondering what on earth I was going to do!  It's still not great to have such a big uplift vs last year but after thinking it was going to be close to £1000 for a month I am almost relived - maybe that is the plan :-(

  • Hi,
can you give dates  and actual units used for the period, also price per unit and daily standing charge, to check things for you?

  • Hi this has now been resolved as it wasn't the unit price or daily standing charge but the adjustment amount that was added that was incorrect and made the bill so much higher
