MOT – When is the best time?

Hi all,

So my car's MOT is due on 1st March.

How far in advance can I book my MOT in for, and still retain that 1st March date for 2024?

Thanks in advance.

You should get a reminder soon and I believe you can do it 1 month in advance

Not hard to find on the .gov site:

    https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot

Earliest date you can get an MOT

An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on your current MOT pass certificate.

You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.

  • Here you are, wasn't that difficult to find!
It should be on the test cert. print out too.

Not unless you have signed up to the reminder service.

If it fails on the pre-date, is it still MOT'd?

No - once it fails an MOT - any previous valid MOT is no longer applicable. So you'll have to get it fixed and MOT'd again.

An MOT fails due to a safety related item - so if something is shown as needing doing, they couldn't very well say 'Oh go on then keep on driving for the next month until your old MOT expires'.

OK thanks, that's how I expected it.

the previous mot is still valid but if you knowingly drive it  with dangerous faults you could be fined

Driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition is an offence, whether knowingly or not.
