personal finance software.

Hi looking for recommendations please for free personal finance software.

It needs to be simple or I could struggle, it needs to be free as I don’t want to pay out money to find I can’t get on with it.

Like many on MSE, I have loads of regular savers, bank accounts, savings accounts and investments. It’s all very fluid and at times like herding cats so need more control.

Has anyone used Money dashboard? Or any other suggestions please.

I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.

I use excel - couple of tabs and then one to show all.

I have tried specific software in the past - but if it's free it usually has ad's or something, and they tend not to be very flexible.

I use Money Dashboard but only as a balance aggregator, using the open banking function. I don’t use it as an historical collator or forecasting tool.

It links in to most major banks but not the new ones, which could be added manually if needed.

I use it as a daily balance checker which avoids having to log in to 15 different banks. It updates very quickly and once even showed a transaction before the bank’s own app!

The Emma app is much the same and both have analysis and forecasting tools but I have no need for these.

PS Just remembered that it was Emma that had showed the transaction before the bank’s app.

Yes. I've had all updates since 2012
    • One time low purchase fee entitles you to ALL FUTURE updates. No need to purchase over and over again every couple of years.
and does it link with all your accounts?
Apparently but I don't use it

Is this to use on a PC, mobile, or both?
And any preference to local application Vs web based?

But my advice would be to try a few, and see what works for you, as you will likely get advice for many different ones.

Also, are you happy to manually update, or would you prefer automatic linking to banks (via Open Banking)?
The latter is easier, but not all accounts are supported (e.g. Chase, and many savings providers)

I also continue to use MSMoney.  It works fine under WIndows11.  I know of no other personal finance software than  seemlessly includes both investments and bank accounts with automatic update of data and a very wide range of report generation and data export options.

Forgot to add my recommendation (as that was the OP's request).

Moneyhub, which is app and web based (I am not a PC user).
