Arrears on Gas bill - help?

The gas bill for our home is in my name and we unfortunately have big arears on it. My wife and I are in talks about separating (due to many reasons we can't get over). I will be the one to move out but I am worried what will happen to the gas bill. Can I take it with me (I'm moving into parents house) and my wife take a new account out?

I'm very sorry to hear of your predicament and wish you all the best. Regarding the energy account, that is for the property not an individual, I'm afraid.1

If you move out your wife can open an account in her name as a new occupier, but you will need to clear the arrears when you close the account, if it's in your sole name.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but you will need to get the account into her name once you move out, sadly not unknown for huge bills to be deliberately run up on the absent payers accountThe current bill although in your name is joint, she after all has had some benefits from it, like the house, but would take some legal sorting and TBH with all the hassle just one more bullet to bite IMOWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray1
