The event that caused the need to cancel occured while the existing travel insurance was valid.See https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/experts/article-4603020/Can-cancel-August-trip-insurance-ends-July.html which seem to contradict advice above.A little bit more positive but still not holding out too much hope.

The only way to be certain is to speak to the insurer. If you have a letter now advising against travel it would seem logical that you are covered by your insurer. BUT only the insurer can give you their interpretation. If they do refuse I would raise a complaint and take it from there.

I’d always assumed that my policy covered me otherwise annual policies make no sense at all. My policy for example runs July to July and due to having to declare pre existing conditions for both myself and OH they do not allow automatic renewal and each year we have to phone our existing and potential new insurers to get new quotes. They also don’t allow us to take out the new insurance too far in advance.
So I have holidays booked from now right through to October , all were booked since last July but obviously for the later ones my current policy will have expired and I might not be renewing with the same insurer. If something totally drastic should happen now meaning I would have to cancel my holidays today I would expect all to be covered , otherwise how could I cover the holidays falling after July? Obviously if I got to the end of my policy and did not take out new insurance and then in August had some reason why I couldn’t travel then I wouldn’t insured as I would have no policy in place at the point I needed to claim.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Sounds like a delaying tactic. The doctor maybe won't want to, may get around to it, may tell them to be in touch with the hospital.
Meanwhile you are getting exasperated unwell and may give up.
I may sound cynical but I went through 9 months of a dispute with a 'reputable' big holiday company and work dealings with insurance. 8 out of 9 people gave up due to health, moves etc.
But on the up side by requesting confirmation it looks positive.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on
The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well

Hoping you get it sorted, as others have said I'd assume that if you cancel now, you'd be covered on the current policy, but I'm no expert. I just wanted to say hope the kidney stone passes very soon, and without fuss. My husband also gets them time to time, sometimes it can be a very short lived thing, others not so much. He had the last once when we were in Tenerife a few years ago, the local hospital were fab and just round the corner (before Brexit), hooked him up to a drip, he was out and about and feeling absolutely fine within an hour - no idea what the drip was, probably just saline!1
