I think one positive (if it can be called that) is that I doubt dealers want you to cancel today as much, unlike yesterday.

A year ago, with the shortages etc, they'd have probably welcomed cancellations that they could then take delivery of, and stick on their site for purchase at the new market (ie. higher) prices that were being paid.

Today - car sales are hugely down (see news eg BBC) - so I doubt they want loads of stock that may well not sell.

Indeed new registrations are down on previous years, but that article makes it very clear it's because dealers still can't get enough new cars. They would love to have loads of stock.

It says demand is still high but manufacturers struggle to obtain electronic parts as well as other components which used to be made in Ukraine.

    Just the same as 2022.

    >>New car registrations in the UK fell last year to their lowest level in three decades, new figures show.

Despite a recovery in the second half of 2022, a continuing parts shortage hit production lines.<<

You do realise that part shortage is as bad or worse than 2020/21. Thanks to a certain Russian gent.

Registrations are down as manufactures can not produce enough cars to meet demand.

Take Kia as a example. The new Sportage has long delays. Some people are cancelling due to this. The cars they cancel, are now on sale at dealers for more than list price & shifting straight away.

So no dealer is left with any stock... They would love to have stock to be able to shift straight away.

    Hi,

Ok - so ordered new Car in Feb 2022; since have received 5 delivery date estimates (latest being March 2023).

Feels like manufacturer wants me to
cancel order (which I don’t want to) as the financials work out better for them.

Does anyone know how long a manufacturer can delay delivering an order?

I’ve asked the question to them; as I can’t believe they are not fulfilling any new car orders from 2022; and if not why are they allowed to keep taking orders of they can’t fulfil?

Not looking to cancel (I know I can) nor looking to blame (know situation is unique). Interested in knowing what if any pressure I can put on them
to stop pushing my order - or can they do this indefinitely?
I have a fiend who ordered a new car in OCT 21, he is still waiting, latest is possibly March this year

We ordered a new EV in November 2022 (Mustang Mach-E from Ford), picked from available stock and drove it away from the dealership 2 weeks later.

Sometimes a case of picking from what is available instead of joining the back of a long queue for a completely bespoke order.

Bonus for us was that we were able to get a discontinued colour that we much preferred!

I've been out to try and buy a new car over the holiday period, as my BMW 3-series is coming up to 4 years old.
What I want is the same as my current one, just new; however, mine has only done 19k miles, so I've no pressing need to replace it other than to have a new one.
    • I went to my current BMW dealership who came up with a monthly PCP payment of 40% more than my current one.
    • I went to another BMW dealership who came up with a similar price (they'd been quite competitive when I looked last year).
    • I went to a Subaru dealer to check on Imprezzas and found out they no longer make them. I did have a good chat with the person there and they also had a lovely old Ferrari in the showroom, but unfortunately I haven't got a spare £80k.
    • I went to a Jaguar dealership and they said they didn't have any in of what would be their equivalent to show me and didn't really make much of an effort in all honesty.
    • I went to a Mercedes dealership and they said they couldn't advise what would be their equivalent to a BMW 3-series.
I decided that they don't really want to sell me a car at the moment and I'd be as well keeping the one I have.
    So, no sale.

Manufacturer is BMW (Model is X5 45e).
That specific model has a huge backlog and lead time - especially due to the MD/VP+ Company Car segment this model was very appealing on the BIK....

BMW are taking orders for a car with a deposit - if they cant fulfill they will cancel and return the deposit. They can only be called out for failing to deliver if they miss the date and the terms they have say they won't miss it (they wont have those terms)
