I've found some "section" diagrams on the internet and it looks like it is a plastic strip that keeps the glass in place.
So potentially the double-glazing section can be replaced.0 -
Bit of a security risk if your window glass can be removed from the outside! No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Indeed although I suspect you can only remove the glass from the inside.
I'll delete this thread in an hour or so. Don't want this info tempting anyone...0 -

I was surprised when the glazers put the glass for our new aluminium windows in from the outside, but its the rubber seals on the inside that hold the glass against the edging that stop the edging surrounding the windows from being removed.

mark_cycling00 said:Hi all.
I'm confused about the construction of my windows... some of the double-glazing panes have now failed and need to be replaced so it probably affects how/whether this can be done.
The window frames are definitely metal and fitted into fake-sandstone surround.
The window-pane element seems to be metal on the interior side but the exterior facing side seems to be plastic, within a thin metal surround.
My hope is that this plastic is what keeps the double-glazing in, and therefore the glazing can be replaced without having to buy new metal window-panes.
Does this sound correct?
Many thanksGDB2222 said:Bit of a security risk if your window glass can be removed from the outside!
We had old windows that could be removed from the outside but you'd then need to either break the frame to create a large enough entry hole or have a generic square window lock key to undo the window. When we got broken into though they didnt do either of those but instead bent the frame to the patio door that enabled them to open it.2 -
It would be nice to replace the metal windows with "thermally broken" aluminium, double-glazed ones.
Get a lot of condensation from steel frames...0 -

I think they are Crittall "Homelight". Good condition, no rust, just some DG panes have gone.0
