Advice about fundraising

Hi
My ex-wife has become involved in raising money for a young boy who requires medical treatment in America. The appeal figure is £250,000 and they have raised approximately £25,000. I have had little involvement but get the feeling that the fundraising committee has not raised the profile of the the young boy sufficiently. I have suggested that they need the media to champion the appeal along with local businesses. I know - easier said than done. I am not sure that anyone in the committee has any connections that could make this easier. I said that I would ask advice on here on her behalf. Any advice or ideas would be massively appreciated.
Thank you
Phil

Its great that you have raised funds to that amount already - what a great start.
To get the media interest you need to do one of two things:
A very bizarre/different fund raising event
The support of a high profile organisation/business person/celebrity to get the media noticing you
What area are you in?Happy and thankful with never enough time to do everything:rotfl:0 -
or 3, have a touching / unusual 'human interest' story.
Try contacting a journalist at your local paper and asking for advice on how to let more people know about this wee boy. Tell him/her the story, and they may pick it up - or at least give you some strong suggestions and advice.
ditto radio. EMap stations in Scotland run charitable grant givers for children, so they might be interested, but aso might award funding. not sure about in Englandfor more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.
New Year's Resolution: Post less unnecessary posts. (and that was 2007)
yes, I realise I may appear cold and heartless a lot of the time.0 -
Firstly, very good luck in getting the funds raised. I completely agree with the above points. There was a guy living near me who needed expensive treatment and after being covered well in the local paper it got picked up by the nationals.
Also check with your local library as they most likely will have directories of trusts and organisations that can be approached for fundraising. I'm pretty sure that I've seen one for people looking to raise money for individuals, so that may be a good starting point too. It may be a "Directory of Social Change" publication, as I've seen a few books from them on fundraising.
Again, very good luckPlease stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
