Benefits over state pension age

Hi, I’m trying to understand the financial situation on behalf of my mum. She currently receives ESA support group ( I think that’s the correct group), PIP, housing benefit and council tax benefit.

She reaches state pension age in November. I know the PIP will continue, but what about the others?

We haven’t asked for a state pension statement yet and I haven’t started looking into pension credits, but I know that we will have to do that.

She has no other income or pension pots.

ESA is a working age benefit and will end when she reaches state pension age. She will need to apply for her state pension. Does she live alone or with a partner?
  • Apologies I should have added more info. She lives alone in social rented accommodation. I think the main thing I’m unsure of is does her HB and council tax support continue, or will it just be the state pension and PIP that she receives?

Then housing benefit and council tax reduction will continue. As she's living alone with no other Income then she'll be entitled to Severe disability premium (providing no one is claiming either carers allowance or carers element of Universal Credit for looking after her) If her ESA is Income Related she should already be claiming this as part of her ESA.
She'll need to apply for pension credit before reaching state pension age and the SDP will be included in that calculation. Being entitled to pension credit will then entitle her to full housing benefit and council tax reduction.

Given the recent long DWP delays in the administration of SP & PC, it's worth starting the application process many months in advance of her retirement date.

I was on ESA in 2014 when I reached state pension age.  They just transferred me from one to the other so I didn’t have to apply for my SP.  Was this unusual?

I would have expected you to have to apply for your SP in 2014. My wife had to apply which she did by phone.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
