Faulty Laptop

Options
Hi there friends,

Happy New Year to you all.

I need some help please. I got a new laptop from John Lewis - I decided to splash out and spent close to £800 on this one - HP Pavilion 13 13-bb0003na Laptop, Intel Core i7 Processor, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 13.3" Full HD, Silver - (normally I don't go over £500 as I just use it here and there for a bit of work, browsing and perhaps watching something on Amazon Prime).

I've used it for about a week and the battery goes from 100% to 25% in less than half an hour and it's whirring like something silly.
It keeps popping up with error messages when I try to download Teams for work.
It's really slow and all - it takes about 5 minutes for a page to load. It's not the internet at home, it's the laptop.

My previous laptop was an Asus one which  gave me close to 24 hours battery life even when in use - it only cost about £300 I believe.

My friend said let the battery run out, charge it up and repeat a few times as it may have been in storage for a long time but it's made no difference.

Do I just phone up John Lewis and say it's faulty I don't want it?

Also, I want a new laptop. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've sat browsing on PC WORLD, Argos and various other places but they all look and seem the same to me. HELP!  I use Word and Excel, I browse online, I may put a few things on eBay and I may watch some songs on YouTube or something on Amazon Prime or BBC iPlayer. I don't want an all singing all dancing one, just something that doesn't whirr and has decent battery life.

Thanks to anyone who can help :-)

Software issues you can reset Windows yourself, because that's all JL would do.  That should clear the speed problem and may also sort the battery out (if there is something that's so intensive its draining the battery).

How many laptops do you need?

HP Pavilion computers are OK machines, but your brand new one is definitely faulty. It doesn't have a hard drive so the whirry thing is the cooling fan, which with an i7 and 8GB of ram should hardly if ever come on for your kind of use.

How long have you had it? Tell the store it is faulty and you want to return it.

I think that for your usage, a Chromebook would be fine.
JL stock a range of at least 4 HP Chromebooks, all costing less than half your budget. They have other brands as well.
They all differ in weight, size, screen brightness, etc. but any of them will do what you want.

Why not go into store and see which you like best?

    It's not great

    • 33.8 cm (13.3 "), FHD (1920 x 1080), 250 nits, 45% NTSC(Low quality screen)
    • Intel® UHD Graphics

This is better for the same money: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295378895126

    13.4", FHD+ (1920 x 1200), 500 nits, 72% NTSC, InfinityEdge, 60Hz, Non-Touch, Anti-Glare..

    Intel Iris Xe Graphics

But of course there was really no need to spend that much in the first place :)

You ought to make sure all windows updates and firmware are up to date including advanced settings on windows update to enable the bit about other Microsoft products as this is the first thing JL will probably tell you to do.

If you want to see exactly what is happening to the battery you can try this

    1. In the Windows Search Bar type: Command Prompt
    2. Right Click with mouse on Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator
    3. Yes to UAC prompt
A prompt will appear to which you need to give permission
    4. In the Command Prompt type the following command:
    powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery_report.html"
Note that for the pros you can designate the output toanydirectory. For simplicity, we are placing it in the C:\ root folder.
    powercfg /energy //output "C:\energy_report.html"
    5. Find file
Using Explorer navigate to C:\ aka the root directory. You should see a file labeledbattery_report.html.

The laptop is probably running Windows Update, hence the whirring fan noise  But it shouldn't drain what should be a battery with 100% health in 30 minutes, especially one which can last 8 hours according to JL's specifications.
You could try completing the Windows Updates before phoning JL.  But I'd be completely put off by what seems to be such a short battery life.

The battery is probably discharging because it seems to be continuously powering the fans

It could be a faulty temperature sensor ie the laptop thinks it is hot even when it isn't

You could also Google HP Pavillion fan problem eg https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_3045299-2819686-16

Sorry for not having replied sooner. I got the laptop just less than a month ago. I've only used it two or three times but didn't like how I had to have it on charge all the time.

I will get my nephew to try and do all the things you have mentioned above. I am not that good with technology.

I did actually go into the JL but the member of staff who "helped me" was even more clueless than me. I asked for help with a new laptop and he said "these are all laptops" and pointed at them and then walked off.

    Thanks for your help.

OK, you've probably stopped looking at this thread now but here's my suggestion.

Power up the laptop and right click on the start icon (bottom left of your screen, hopefully) and choose Task Manager.

Then, with the Processes tab highlighted, you can see what is running and what is using the most CPU. If you click on the Performance tab, you'll see little graphs of what's happening.

Post back here with what you see in the Processes tab - the ones using the highest % of CPU. People here can then tell you, more clearly, what your laptop is doing and perhaps why it is doing it.

If there is a problem then contact JL and let them sort it.You can spend hpours/days/weeks trying to fix it - You have LEGAL RIGHTS so exercise them - the longer you delay then the more problems you creat.
