If its gas heated then that will be the cheapest way to heat up the water.

The electric element will have just its internal thermostat set usually to 80c and would have to be controlled by the time its left on for.

Might be worth getting some quotes for a hot water timer and thermostat.

Point 2, and the 4 on the latest post got me confused, No E7, 'normal radiators' and 'boilers'
  • All immersion heaters have thermostats: if they didn’t, then your cylinder would just keep heating and the Ayer would boil. This photograph is from a Gledhill servicing guide:

To change the temperature you need to turn off all power; remove the immersion heater external cap and adjust the dial at the top of the photo.

You can also replace the thermostat with something like Tesla A (£94 on a well known website). This is a 10 minute job for an electrician.

  • This Tesla smart heater is a great product from online reviews. I have looked at it in more detail and it's a great product but need to factor in that it might break more often (in theory) so savings may not materialise (changing a normal heating element is a fraction of cost of Tesla). Perhaps for the most frugal the time guard switch shared by the poster above (https://www.heatingcontrolsonline.co.uk/optimium-wifi-immersion-heater-timer.html) is the cheapest/most reliable option.
