We enjoy seeing the local children all dressed up so don’t mind the knocks on the door, however we don’t get that many due to being off the beaten track. Parents tend to ask in advance if it will be okay and also accompany the children so it all works out nicely and there has never been any unpleasantness nearby that I have heard of. The children are so happy and excited and I find it quite infectious. We are lucky I think!
I haven’t wanted to go and buy plastic bottles of water that we may not use so have also focused on using the camping containers and we will also make sure the water butts get filled. Not too difficult in the wet West! Also have a portaloo, gas barbecue, a wood burning stove and oil fuelled cooker . I can boil water if needed. Plenty of candles and tea lights. Loo rolls come in a bulk order every few months so I already have rather too many and will be able to share. My food cupboards are fairly well stocked anyway and we have a large power bank that can keep the freezer and fridge going in power cuts. Our camping fridge could be used and can be powered with a portable solar panel or a power bank. I think that not living close to shops, being used to power cuts and having camping equipment to hand means we are reasonably well prepared for mild problems. We have a wind up radio somewhere so I must dig that out and check it. Our rechargeable torch is very old so I think we could do with a replacement for that and I have recently noticed rechargeable lamps which could be a useful addition. I do wonder if growing up through the power cuts of the 1970s has really meant that I have always remained somewhat prepared for them.
