It annoys me that they ask you to confirm your address but when you ask them what address they have for you they say they can't say because of Data Protection! There really needs to be a better way to deal with officialdom and banks!

@joedenise - Yes, that's an issue, isn't it? I'm a big supporter of data protection, but in instances like these, it could rather play into a scammer's hands. Despicable people.

What always annoys me about those callers is they will ring my mobile & ask if they are speaking to me. I just ask in a very formal but angry tone - who's speaking please. My current favorite reponse is sorry I haven't got my hearing aids in & cannot make out what you are saying. I did once have my bank fraud team ring about an actual fraud & he landed up trying to stifle his laughter. Told me to go on the banks website ring the number for whatever & ask for his department, being me I rang a friend first just to be sure the call hadn't stayed connected. I am also quite fond of telling them that they have pronounced my name wrong which if they really were English they wouldn't have. The next favourite is like you Ms not Mrs although for different reasons. I work on the assumption that if they are calling me they want to scam me. Me cynical! never!I did once when receiving my 13th call in 2 days after telling them not to call again on the 8th say I apologise for this but it should stop you calling - do not call my f***ing phone again. It was the first time I had ever said that word out loud but they never called again. It only works for UK calls though.2

I have been similarly ascerbic with nuisance callers in the past, @badmemory. I should have been more suspicious at the very outset today when the scammer got my name in the wrong order. I think the reason I didn't is that it is such a frequent occurrence. I have a different surname to Mr F & it is also double-barrelled, causing all sorts of incorrect variations.

I always start off asking them who they are in my best Received Pronunciation English ,a lot just hang up at that point !2

My OH gives them the same mouthful @badmemory did! They do not call back! I love when they address either of us by the other's surname. My standard response for that one is along the lines of offering them his ex's phone number since she still has an attachment to his surname!

O temd to tell them to P off and put the phone down. Alternatively to write to me in a civilased manner. One day it will be the bank or cradit card.1

Well I hope as I found that any real one will think it is hillarious & tell you how to check. Although they didn't mention ringing another number before you call them on their number. I would always do that because some of them keep the line open so you ring what is the right number but they steal the call.2
