Egg Money application rejected after "Quality Check"

I had an online application for an Egg Money card accepted, only to receive a terse letter several days later saying that after "random quality checking" they had reversed their decision. It seems to me from the wording that the implication of the letter is that they suspect there is something in my application that was untrue (which is not the case).

I phoned them up and they won't explain the reason for changing their decision, so I'm a bit confused. I could understand being turned down by their initial credit scoring (I'm debt free and usually pay off credit card bills every month), but this sounds a bit more sinister!

Well are you going to be any loss to them. You already state you pay off your credit cards each month. From a Eggs point of view you are a waste of space.
  • As I said, I'm not surprised at being turned down on a credit-scoring basis, but I am surprised after being accepted (and called to check on employment details) at the nature of the letter I've received which has a clear implication that the details I provided originally were not correct. That seems to me a far bigger concern than being refused a card I don't really need.
  • I worked for egg a little while back so things may have changed but... from what you've said it sounds like your application may have been declined by the fraud team.

It is them who would have checked your employment details. The person you initially spoke to wouldn't know why you have been declined, it will just show that the fraud team have declined it.

I obviously can't confirm it for definate though so there could be other reasons why. It wouldn't be worth asking them if it is the fraud team because they wouldn't be allowed to say, hence why they didn't give much info to you anyway.

You can always ask them how to appeal against the decision though. You will most likely be asked to send proof of ID + bank statements etc.

Mable, I don't think that clearing your card each month would harm any application. I keep a credit balance on my Egg Money card and use it for all I can which I'm sure makes money for Egg. I am looking forward to a respectable cash back in March plus the small amount of monthly interest.
