Thank you/Christmas gift for conveyancer

We completed on a property in early/mid Dec. To thank our conveyancer’s hard work to push the deal across the finish line, we arranged for a hamper to be delivered to their office the day after completion as they are not local. I am wondering if sending a gift to the conveyancer is a common practice? If so, what do people normally send?

Unfortunately, we haven’t heard from the conveyancer since. We are not sure if they have received the gift other than the photo of the box left on their office table by the courier. Any suggestions on what we should do?

  • They might not be allowed to accept gifts, this could be especially true depending on the value.
Does your conveyancer work at the office full time or at home some days? Maybe they were not in to get it.

Or they had already finished for the holidays?

The potential issues on the value of the gift did not cross my mind. I have assumed it to be fine as all items in the hamper are consumables(food).

Our conveyancer do work some days at home. But the office remained opened for another 2 weeks after our completion. I guess I just assumed she would be in at least 1 day during that time or someone else at the office would tell her. Many items in the hamper are Christmas themed so I do very much hope she has received it.

I meant her rather than the office.

She definitely worked for at least another 10 days after our completion. We talked about the latest day we can complete before Christmas if things took longer than expected.

I sent a bottle of fizz and chocolates to mine. I'd normally have gone for flowers but it was late 2020 and so work from home was still a big thing.

Maybe your conveyancer works from home full-time? Hard to know nowadays as Covid proved it could be done. I'd expect the office to let her know that there's something big been delivered for her.

Was there anything in there that needed to be refrigerated or eaten within a short time period? And would it have been clear from the packaging that this was the case?
  • I sent a bottle of Baileys to mine. He thanked me by email a week later saying how much he enjoyed it.

A bottle of fizz and chocolates sound lovely. I thought a selection of food items would be nice. If there is something she doesn't like, she can at least share it with someone at the office. Luckily, I didn't choose anything perishable this time. It's mostly chocolate truffles, biscuits and drinks. But receiving Christmas pudding after Christmas would be a bit weird. I just want to be sure she has received it.

I don't think she works at home full time. Her assistants mentioned some documents were left on her desk at some point.
  • Maybe the card fell out or was missing so they don't know who it was from? Or could it have even gone to the wrong office? It could be a shared workspace type office. If you've not heard by now I'd want to be sure it had arrived do maybe drop a line saying: thanks again, we love our house blah blah, do hope you received the thank you gift..."
