A good few hours on allotment this morning, mainly moving things around and then decided to unpack and tidy the shed since i couldn't find stuff.
Created a small seating area surrounded by raised boxes under the plum tree, positioned the old garbage bin with tap (for nettles feed) onto a pallet, collected rubbish.
    A note that might help:
If you going to use cardboard to suppress weeds, take a moment to remove the cellotape and plastic bits. Running around chasing after it on a windy day a year later is no fun.

@Suffolk_lass i don't have heated propagators, but the bag i used had lovely humid drops on inside today, so it looks like it warm enough on window sill.
A couple of hours on allotment first thing this morning before work. Dug over the climbing bean bed and the path next to the brassicca bed that's now part of the bed. Both are 3m long!
All the sides of both beds are now bordered with either wood or old plastic fachia boards, due to couch grass creeping in last year.
Found an article about couch grass, going to read tonight on mealbreak, hoping to learn something.

The leeks have all germinated, it took what, a week? So chuffed.

  • Haven't sown anything yet as the light levels (and temperature) in my kitchen have been really poor so far - decided to order some grow lights at the weekend so when they arrive tomorrow I'll get the heated propagator out and get everything ready to sow on Wednesday when my grandbaby is here to help 😁 I'll check out my planting lists to make sure I get everything in but I know that chillis, tomatoes and peppers will definitely be going in! I'll also get some salad leaves started as I'm just about to finish off the last of the ones in the greenhouse

  • I'm trying to use old supermarket potatoes that we didn't get round to using and they are now chitted (they did it themselves in the bag I put them in). They are now in potato bags in a sheltered spot so we will see if anything happens with them. It may be a bit early but I'm curious. Unfortunately I'd accidentally torn off the variety label.

Silly question, when you use a clear bag to proprogate, when it goes misty on the top of the bag, does this clear? As I'm a bit concerned I won't actually be able to see if anything has grown!

@Glittering_M  i just give the bag a tap to clear the drops or gently push down so it closer to soil. The leek bag was opaque, so had to open it to see inside.

  • Thank you!
  • My house was 6c this morning before I put the heating on. Heating is set to 18c but I've just checked it and it is only up to 13cdespite it being on since about 10am. Not holding much hope of things germinating but we will see!
  • Hi all.  newbie here.  I have no garden to speak of.  I can do a few pots, and/or windowsill.   What do people recommend to grow, please?  Thank you

Hi. In my first year of growing my own, I grew strawberries in hanging baskets (worked well), cherry tomatoes, some onions in a container, salad leaves (the ones you cut and they regrow) and some herbs. All of these were easy to grow in pots and containers I had. Good luck!
