Card not working at Post Office

  • Have you got one of those PinSentry (or similar) things for online banking? If so, you can easily test to see if the card's chip is working.

Although card reader is not part of LBG, I've just tried this and got PIN correct.

Does the card need activating 1st if it's a new card?
Bank of Scotland debit cards don't need activating.
Indeed, and it is a successor card with same PIN.

I recall several years ago, before the extension of contactless, one store with worn card readers had a problem with Santander cards. The European design was marginally thinner, so the chip couldn't make the required contact inside the worn reader. One workaround was to back the card up with a bit of paper. I wonder if it could be a fault like this with the PO reader, which didn't seem particuarly new. Although the BoS card seems identical to Lloyds, perhaps there's something in the new design an old reader can't cope with. In which case, ordering a replacement card wouldn't help. And experimenting with paper in PO might seem odd without cashier's encouragement.

Even if the card is active on your profile, you still need to activate the chip on the card by using it in a Cash Machine or POS device with your PIN number. The most obvious consequence of doing so is that the contactless functionality then works.

I would assume that Post Office POS devices work with this but perhaps not - they are a bit weird as they wear multiple hats - if you withdraw cash then the device acts like a LINK cash machine, but if you pay a bill or buy some stamps this goes through your Visa/Mastercard debit functionality. Sometimes subpostmasters try to persuade you to do a withdrawal for the correct amount of cash to buy the stamps or whatever (so they get a few pence instead of losing a few pence in txn fees).

Searching online I found out about something the Post Office is doing for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard:
'we know that some cards for certain banks are not working on PIN pads that have been upgraded to the new process'

Cards from a number of banks are listed as having problems (Santander, Bank of Ireland, TSB) although nothing from HBOS.

Just to update the forum, I had cause to return to the same Post Office and withdraw cash. The same BOS card now worked first time. So there must just have been a local/temporary problem affecting only the HBOS part of LBG last time.

Most cards need to have the pin used once before they play the game.
Just get a balance from a cash machine, then try to post office again.
I used Chase for day to day spending for the 1% cashback.
Don’t no if card works or not as Chase set up Google wallet when account was opened.
The card is still in its delivery envelope and never been used.
